About the assets

Bitcoin and Ethereum - what you should know

Understanding both assets helps you make informed decisions about when and why to convert BTC to ETH.

Bitcoin logo

Bitcoin (BTC)

Bitcoin is the first and most widely adopted cryptocurrency, created in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It operates on a proof-of-work consensus mechanism and has a hard-capped supply of 21 million coins, making it deflationary by design. Bitcoin is primarily used as a long-term store of value and as a hedge against inflation — often called "digital gold." It is the most liquid cryptocurrency and the most widely accepted collateral in DeFi protocols.

Ethereum logo

Ethereum (ETH)

Ethereum is a decentralised blockchain platform that enables smart contracts and decentralised applications (dApps). Launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and co-founders, Ethereum transitioned from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake in September 2022 (The Merge), reducing energy consumption by over 99%. ETH is the native currency used to pay gas fees for all transactions and smart contract interactions on the Ethereum network, including across Layer 2 scaling solutions like Arbitrum, Optimism and Base.

Expert tips

BTC to ETH exchange tips from our team

01Use the correct networks. Always send BTC on the Bitcoin network and provide an Ethereum mainnet address to receive ETH. Sending to the wrong network results in permanent loss of funds.

02Double-check your ETH address. Ethereum addresses are case-sensitive in some contexts and transactions cannot be reversed. Paste, don't type. Verify the first and last 4 characters against your wallet.

03 Choose fixed rate for large swaps. If you're exchanging a significant amount, the fixed rate locks in your ETH payout for 20 minutes regardless of market movement  eliminating slippage risk.

04Send within the quote window. Your BTC deposit address and rate are valid for a specific time window. If you miss it, the order may expire. Set a reminder before initiating.

05 Test with a small amount first. If this is your first swap or you're using a new wallet address, do a small test transaction before the main one to confirm funds arrive correctly.

06Save your transaction hash. Copy and save the Bitcoin transaction hash after sending. This lets you track your swap status and provides a reference ID for support if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most BTC to ETH swaps complete within 10 to 30 minutes. Bitcoin requires 1 to 2 network confirmations before SecureShift processes the exchange, then ETH is sent directly to your wallet. During periods of high Bitcoin network congestion, confirmations may take longer. You can track your transaction status using the Bitcoin transaction hash.

The minimum BTC amount is dynamic and displayed in real time in the exchange widget before you start. Minimums fluctuate based on current network fees to ensure your swap is economically viable after all transaction costs are deducted.

No account or KYC is required for swaps. SecureShift is a non-custodial exchange — you send BTC from your wallet and receive ETH directly in your Ethereum wallet. Only unusually large or high-risk transactions may require additional verification under our AML policy.

Yes. The rate displayed in the widget is all-in: the SecureShift service fee and estimated network fees for both Bitcoin and Ethereum are included. There are no hidden charges. What you see is exactly what you receive.

With a floating rate, the exchange rate shown is live and locks in only once SecureShift receives your BTC deposit. The final ETH amount may differ slightly from the estimate. With a fixed rate, the rate locks for 20 minutes after you create the order, so you know exactly how much ETH you will receive regardless of market movement during that window. Fixed rate is recommended for large swaps.

Yes. SecureShift fully supports ETH to BTC swaps with the same non-custodial, no-account process. The reverse swap typically also completes within 10–30 minutes.

SecureShift is fully non-custodial. Your funds are never held on the platform beyond the brief window needed to complete the exchange. BTC is sent from your wallet and ETH is delivered directly to your wallet. SecureShift has completed over 850,000 swaps since launch and is listed on BestChange and Trustpilot with verified reviews. Our AML/KYC compliance policy is published at secureshift.io/aml-kyc.
