Monero Atomic Swap vs Instant Swap: How They Work and Which to Use
By the SecureShift Team · Updated November 7, 2026
Disclosure: SecureShift offers some of the services mentioned here. We cover alternatives too. This is educational content, not legal or financial advice.
Both get you XMR without an account. An atomic swap is enforced by code on two blockchains: either both sides complete or both get refunded. It mainly works for BTC↔XMR and needs desktop software. An instant swap is run by a service. It works from many more coins in a browser and is faster, but you trust the service to deliver.
What Is a Monero Atomic Swap?
In a BTC↔XMR atomic swap, each side locks coins on its own chain. Cryptography (adaptor signatures) ties the two locks together, so claiming one side reveals the secret needed to claim the other. If something stalls, timelocks let each party take their own coins back. No company ever holds your funds. The BTC↔XMR protocol was developed by the COMIT team and is used by apps like eigenwallet (formerly UnstoppableSwap). BasicSwap offers an atomic-swap order book for several coins against XMR.
The catches
- Mostly BTC. There's no practical atomic route from ETH, SOL or stablecoins to XMR.
- Software and patience. You run a desktop app, pick a liquidity provider ("maker"), and keep it online until the swap finishes.
- Refunds take time. If a swap fails, you can wait hours for a timelock to expire before reclaiming BTC, and you have to act within the refund window.
What Is an Instant Swap?
An instant swap is a single order. You pick a pair, paste your XMR address, and send the deposit. The service converts it and pays out. On SecureShift, there's no account, the rate is shown before you send, and BTC to XMR averages about 15–25 minutes. Faster chains like SOL or LTC usually settle sooner. Swaps also work in reverse, for example XMR to BTC.
The trade-off: the service executes the trade, so you rely on it to deliver. Add a refund address and test with a small amount first.

Which One Should You Use?
Choose an atomic swap if…
- You're swapping BTC and want zero counterparty risk.
- You're comfortable running desktop software and waiting if something stalls.
Choose an instant swap if…
- You hold ETH, USDT, SOL, LTC or another coin besides BTC.
- You want XMR in minutes from a browser or phone, with no software to install.
What About P2P Markets Like Haveno?
Haveno isn't an atomic swap. It's a peer-to-peer market that uses Monero multisig and arbitrators, mainly to trade XMR for fiat such as bank transfers. It's useful if you have no crypto to start with, but trades can take hours or days.

FAQ
What is a Monero atomic swap?
A BTC to XMR trade in which both sides lock coins on their own chains, so either both complete or both are refunded. No third party holds the funds.
Are Monero atomic swaps safe?
The protocol prevents the other party from taking your coins, but you must keep the software running and claim refunds within the timelock window if a swap fails.
Can I atomic swap ETH or USDT for Monero?
Not in practice. Atomic swaps for XMR mainly work with BTC. Use an instant swap for ETH, USDT, SOL and other coins.
Is SecureShift an atomic swap?
No. SecureShift runs instant swaps: no account and no software, from many coins, with the rate shown before you send.
How long does a BTC to XMR swap take?
An instant swap on SecureShift averages about 15 to 25 minutes. An atomic swap depends on Bitcoin and Monero confirmations, and a failed one can take hours to refund.
Is Haveno an atomic swap?
